A campaign I highly recommend
almost 10 years ago – Mon, Jun 20, 2016 at 11:14:59 AM

Hi,

Since you kindly backed INSIDE TRACKS I thought you might be interested in a fascinating Kickstarter campaign for a stunning book focused on Muhammad Ali by Time, Life and Sports Illustrated photographer, Al Satterwhite, who had the rare opportunity to spend a great deal of time with Ali getting to know the powerhouse as a man as well as a fighter.

The time frame was early 1970s, a time of turmoil and the fight for personal freedoms. After Muhammad Ali won his Supreme Court case to overturn the rejection of his Vietnam War conscientious objection application he was free to return to his boxing career and train with Angelo Dundee at the now famed 5th Street Gym in Miami Beach.

With your help Al's Kickstarter campaign will result in a limited edition, collectible book featuring of rare stunning intimate images and personal stories of the Champ during his comeback period.  Only 500 of the small run of 1000 books will be numbered and signed as a special edition.

Please check out this campaign and please let anyone who was ever inspired not only by Ali's boxing but by his humanity and intelligence that this is a book they will love.

Support Cancer Awareness in a 1000 mile walk, SCAR STORY a film
almost 10 years ago – Wed, Apr 06, 2016 at 11:55:44 AM

Dear Backers,

It’s been a while, but since you graciously supported my Kickstarter campaign last year I thought you might also be interested in backing another inspirational Kickstarter called SCAR STORY.

In 2014 Paulette Leaphart was diagnosed with breast cancer, and her doctor recommended an immediate and life saving double mastectomy. The procedure was successful, but for other health reasons Paulette was not a good candidate for breast reconstruction, which made her think long and hard about what it means to be both a woman and a survivor.

Now, she is embarking on a big challenge – on April 30th, she begins a 1,000 mile walk across the country, topless, to share her story of survival and to change the face of breast cancer.

Emily MacKenzie (writer/editor on HBO Documentary First Comes Love) is filming a documentary to chronicle Paulette’s brave journey and the SCAR STORY Kickstarter campaign is aimed at covering the expenses of the film crew that will be traveling alongside Paulette in an RV.

To support the film we are donating 50 copies of INSIDE TRACKS to SCAR STORY’s campaign. Each copy will be autographed by Paulette Leaphart and and by me.

I encourage you to check out this KICKSTARTER STAFF PICK and to support Paulette on her adventure!

Best,

Rick Smolan

We also thought you might enjoy knowing that because of your early support for INSIDE TRACKS, the book will be given as a gift to attendees at the big annual TED Conference early next year.

The book was also just given out as the official gift to 1,500 attendees at the San Jose Tech Awards Black Tie Gala in Silicon Valley.

Both of these are incredible honors and we thank you again for helping bring this book and Robyn’s story to a larger audience.

Finally, we are thrilled that the TRACKS movie is now one of the TOP FIVE Indie films on Netflix.

Happy Holidays!!

Dear Backers,

Since you were a generous supporter of my Kickstarter campaign last year I thought you might also be interested in backing a spectacular new book from one of my favorite photographers, Rodney Smith.

The RODNEY SMITH book
The RODNEY SMITH book

Rodney captures dreamlike images that feel as if Magritte had been brought to the 21st century and reborn as a photographer. His playful, surreal and elegant photographs are included in museum collections around the globe.

His previous book was priced at $1000 a copy (too steep for me) but at $75 (autographed!) via Kickstarter, I’m all in - especially when you see the specs on this book

The RODNEY SMITH Book Specs:

  • Over 175 Photographs in color and black & white
  • Dimensions: 13 inches high by 11 inches wide.
  • Paper: Highest quality heavy weight matte-surface paper.
  • Printing Press: Eight color Heidelberg Press.
  • Four-color process, plus tri-tone for the b&w images.
  • The use of a spot varnish on the pictures to make them glow.
  • Printed by master printer Kim Blanchette at Blanchette Press.

If you back his campaign (as I did) please let your friends know (photographers gotta support other photographers!)
